For the last five and a half months, I had the opportunity to learn about general management and finance for Broadway shows. As a recent college graduate, I am amazed by how much I have learned in such a short period of time. RCI provided me with hands-on experience that I would never find in an academic setting. Everyone in the office was enthusiastic and always willing to answer all of my questions.
Overall, I interned during a very exciting time for RCI. I witnessed a lot of transition, as I watched three shows close and two open. The processes were very different and I now have an understanding of how company managers and general managers handle these changes. Additionally, it was exhilarating to witness the openings of Oklahoma! and Hadestown as well as celebrate the rave reviews and numerous Tony nominations. I can't believe that I had the chance to play a small part in their incredible successes.
Moreover, I had the opportunity to learn more about shows in development and how producers and general managers work together in hopes of a Broadway bow. I was in the office during a handful of readings and work sessions, and helped organize three in particular. In doing so, I worked alongside the producers and general managers to coordinate the RSVP's and help manage the actual presentations. All three times, I was impressed to be in the same room as so many producers and investors who make Broadway happen.
As a whole, my internship at RCI Theatricals validated my interest and goals of working on Broadway. I am leaving with knowledge of the commercial theater industry, connections with professionals inside and outside of RCI, and priceless experience. I believe this internship was a great first step for my career in the industry and I feel very grateful for this opportunity.
